Anthony Joshua vs Alexander Povetkin

The unified heavyweight champion of the world. A position held by the poster boy of British boxing, the fans favorite, Anthony Joshua. A fighter who has really inflamed boxing in this country. A man who the fans can get behind. The peoples champion.

Tomorrow this man will put it all on the line when he faces the danger-man of the heavyweight division, Alexander Povetkin, a fighter who offers a real threat to the pedestal that Joshua is sitting on.

Standing a good couple of inches shorter than AJ it will be interesting to see in Povetkins boxing ability will be superior enough to land at close range. Or will AJ box clever much like he did against former WBO world champion Joseph Parker, using his jab to keep the shorter fighter out of range. As fans we hope not. Joshua has suggested this week that he will be looking for a fight and wants to put on a performance. If he can do that then it will really cement his position on the throne as king of the heavyweight division.

Evidence suggests that Povetkin struggles against taller fighters. As mentioned by Peter Fury in an IFLtv interview, David Price very nearly beat him and he has also lost to Wladamir Klitschko. The fights that he has looked best in have been against fighters of a similar size to him, much like the Takam fight. It is hard to believe that Povetkin is suddenly going to be able to really challenge a significantly taller fighter.

Despite this, in the heavyweight division, it only takes one punch and anything can happen.
I believe that Anthony Joshua is too big and too tall for Povetkin. Given the fact that Povetkin struggles against taller fighters and that AJ has been looking invincible in his past number of fights. If Anthony Joshua comes to fight then I see him knocking Povetkin out in the middle rounds. However, I wouldn't be surprised if AJ sits behind the jab and boxes his way to a wide points victory.

Weighing in at 17st 8lb and 5 ounces compared to Povetkins 15st 12lbs, will Joshua simply be too big? I can't wait to find out. Returning to Wembley stadium, this is going to be massive. A stacked under card proves again that the fans are getting their moneys worth on Saturday night. What a time it is to be a boxing fan!
