Fight Night Review

Anthony Joshua has beaten Joseph Parker to unify the heavyweight division and takes one more step towards becoming undisputed champion. A massive showdown between the American Deontay Wilder seems imminent, unless boxing politics get in the way...

Joseph Parker took Anthony Joshua the full 12 rounds but came short on the judges score cards 118-110, 118-110, 119-109. It was the first time that AJ has gone the full fight distance which to me suggests that Joshua is starting to mature more as a boxer. Instead of just relying on his raw strength and power, Joshua has shown that he can box as well. I was impressed with the use of the jab which kept Parker back and out of range and the fact that Joshua used his natural advantages shows to me that he is starting to become a quality boxer as well as being a quality puncher.

The referee ruined the fight for me. As soon as the two fighters got anywhere near each other the referee would split them. I think that this limited the excitement of the fight and stopped Parker from landing on the inside. Parker showed that he is capable of fighting at an elite level and was able to diffuse the power punches of Joshua. If he wants to he will definitely be able to rebuild and gain more experience and challenge for a world title again.

Joshua now holds three of the four major heavyweight belts. Deontay Wilder holds the WBC belt and a massive unification fight is what everybody wants to see next. The winner of that fight would hold all four major belts which would be the first time that has happened in the history of boxing. The only thing stopping this fight from happening is the ego of both fighters and their teams. So often boxing has failed to deliver the fights the fans want to see purely due to the fact that the fighters want to be paid more money than they are worth. What I do not understand is that if Wilder is so confident that he beats Joshua, why does he care about how much he is being paid, as with all the belts around his waist he could easily make a fortune. It wouldn't surprise me if this fight never happens. Fingers crossed it does and we get to see who the greatest of our generation is.
