Bath vs Scarlets - The Review

Scarlets have just beaten Bath in a masterclass performance at the Rec. Scarlets totally outclassed Bath today, playing in a dangerously quick attacking style. Bath will be disappointed to have lost this game as their future in the Champions Cup now depends on what happens in the other games this weekend.

The game started with 1500 Scarlets fans making their way across the bridge to support the Scarlets. They started with an electric fashion and one of the highlights of the game was when Tadhg Beirne (a second row forward) stepped Anthony Watson to get over the whitewash.

The game ended with Bath scoring 17 points to Scarlets 35. They were just the more threatening in attack with offloads keeping their attacking play alive whilst Bath struggled to fight back, with many of their own offloads being intercepted.

Unfortunately for Bath fans it seems that their run of inconsistency is still in full stride. It is frustrating to see a team full of such quality struggle to just put the final pieces into place to become a winning side. If Bath do not make it through to the knockout stages then it could be argued that the season has been a disappointment and almost a failure. Sitting in 5th in the premiership still puts us in a good place to fight for a play off position but something needs to change quickly if Bath are to have a successful end of the season.

I was pleased to see Matt Banahan play well today in his first game back after injury and it being officially announced that he would be leaving for Gloucester come the end of the season. His finish in the right corner was phenomenal, catching the ball above his head and then getting the ball down just before being put into touch.

Unfortunately Rhys Priestland came off early on in the game which gave Freddie Burns the chance to show us what he can do. Although he didn't do anything wrong, I would have liked to see him make more of an impact. I hope he gets more opportunity as I believe he can be a really class player given more game time.
Scarlets just seemed to have the front foot throughout the whole game. Even though Bath would make their tackles, they often gave their attacker a few meters before getting him down, allowing them to offload. I was also very impressed with the Scarlets backrow which played a key role in stopping Bath offloading in attack.

Zach Mercer had another strong game, taking the high ball as cleanly as any top end fullback. It was good to see Sam Underhill back in action doing what he does best. Tackling... And also seeing him carry the ball a bit more was encouraging. Beno Obano played very well and I hope he gets the chance to show his talent in an England shirt in the upcoming Six Nations.

With the international period coming up it will be interesting to see how Bath do when they lose the likes of Anthony Watson and Jonathan Joseph. What do Bath need to do to fix their inconsistency? They are so nearly there. Looking onto next week, Bath play Benetton. Hopefully this will provide an opportunity for Bath to show their improvement.
