Billy Joe Saunders put on a class act in Canada vs David Lemieux. Billy Joe retains the WBO middleweight belt and looks likely to face the winner of the GGG Canelo fight which is thought to be happening in May. If Billy Joe boxes the way that he did against Lemieux then he will be a real threat to both Canelo and GGG.
From my previous posts you can read how much of an influencing factor Dominic Ingle has been on Billy Joe's career. He has relit the fire inside Billy to get back into the ring and see how good he can be. Dominic Ingle is definitely one of the best trainers out there at the moment and I look forward to seeing more of his fighters fight for world titles.
My prediction for the fight was that Billy Joe would knock Lemieux out in rounds 9 or 10. I thought this because of the risk of the judges giving the fight to the home fighter and the fact that the style that Billy Joe adopts is not commonly awarded victories. An example of this was Hughie Fury vs Joseph Parker were Fury was, in my opinion, out-boxing Parker for the whole fight, but the judges didn't believe he was taking the fight to Parker enough to win it.
Many people have criticised the traditional 'hit and not get hit' style, saying it's boring. I disagree. boxing is all about punching and not getting punched back. I think that many boxing fans have forgotten this and just want to see a brawl with a KO at the end. That's not boxing.
Billy Joe Saunders has exceeded many people's expectations. He is now cemented as a true world class fighter and I believe he offers a genuine threat to GGG and Canelo. Both of these fighters do not have the footwork Billy Joe does and actually have a similar style to Lemieux. I can see Billy Joe doing what he did on Saturday night again against the division's elite. I do believe that Danny Jacobs vs Billy Joe would be a very close fight. They both have a similar style which could lead to a classic. I don't see this fight happening before the GGG or Canelo fight though. There is no benefit for Billy. I do however think that he should box again in the new year before taking on the winner of the GGG Canelo rematch to make sure he is match fit for that fight.
It is not unheard of in boxing, for the judges to favour the hometown fighter. This left Billy Joe with two options. Either try and knock Lemieux out, or literally win every round of the fight without being punched.Me and the legend @Michael_Buffer pic.twitter.com/lkODYQPZfo— billyjoesaunders (@bjsaunders_) December 18, 2017
— ODDSbible (@ODDSbible) December 17, 2017Billy Joe took the second option. He completely skilled Lemieux and gave him a boxing lesson. In my opinion Billy won every round of the fight. He even rattled Lemieux in round 7 and nearly knocked him out, but trainer Dominic Ingle told Billy to keep a cool head and to out-box him.
