Boxing is a beautiful sport. It is the purest form of competition. It's you vs an opponent left to physically fight it out. There is no other sport as thrilling or exciting. People have been beating each other up since the beginning of time and this is part of the appeal to boxing, but what I love about the sport is that it is an art form. The skill and ability of these fighters is mesmerizing. It is a shame that there are a few things which hold boxing back. Here's my list of things which ruin boxing. Let me know what yours are...
Doping
When there is a reward, people will always cheat. If you get told to take this substance and then train for 12 weeks and then you will be a millionaire, many people will take that opportunity. It just seems ridiculous that in a sport where you risk your life going into the ring that people will cheat. It is literally like bringing a weapon into the ring with you. Dave Allen has expressed his opinion that it is going to take someone to get killed before there is a one strike ban on drug cheats. I agree. It seems ridiculous though. Dopers can get caught cheating and are then allowed to return to the ring in no time at all. There needs to be more frequent all year testing done on all fighters.
PPV
I wouldn't mind paying to watch a truly great fight. Klitschko vs Joshua. Fine. But every time top end fighters fight it is now on ppv. I just do not understand why the boxing fans accept this. If nobody paid for the fights then the cost would surely go down and it would become more affordable to watch these top fighters. Joshua vs Klitschko was priced at the same price as Joshua vs Takam. It seems ridiculous that fights were priced at the same rate. It is very rare for a championship fight to be aired on normal telly. It's a shame as it is limiting the audience of boxing. Only people who know about it will watch the fights.
Money
Money links to the two points above. Boxers want to be millionaires and to do this they must win and to win they cheat. I feel that the amount of money in boxing is excessive. Fighters believe that they are worth more than they are which then means that for the fights to be made they have to be made ppv just to generate enough money to pay the fighters. However, I feel that if there was a restriction on ppv then fighters would earn more in the long run as boxing would become a bigger sport and then fighters would earn better sponsorship deals due to this.
The Great Fights not Happening
Politics gets in the way of boxing. The great fights either never happen or take so long to organise that they happen when fighters are past their prime. Mayweather vs Pacquiao happened far too late. It feels a shame that the fans are robbed of these great battles. This point is also linked to money as for some reason there is an a side b side mentality in boxing, meaning that one of the fighters is always going to be unhappy, increasing the chances of the fights not happening.
Who's Champion
There are so many belts! Would it not be better just to have one World Champion? One belt? This would mean that the best would have to fight the best and the fans would be able to know who the actual best was instead of speculating about mega fights which rarely happen. One belt. One champion.
Is there anything I've missed? Let me know what you think in the comments...
