AJ vs Takam. The Fight

Anthony Joshua was successful in knocking out Carlos Takam in the 10th round of their heavyweight fight.

It was like a Colosseum. Cardiff's Principality Stadium was an incredible venue for a boxing battle of this size. 78,000 people were all there to watch, breaking the record for the number of people to watch an indoor boxing match. The atmosphere was electric.

Takam came to fight and I think he surprised a few people with how tough he was. He took a number of shots but proved that he has a concrete chin by taking Joshua into the late rounds. Takam knew how to fight a big guy. He's been the smallest guy in the gym for as long as he's been boxing. His game plan against a fighter like AJ was perfect. He kept moving and keeping his gloves up. Even when the referee stopped it Takam had dodged most of the punches before the stoppage. He is a real world level fighter and I hope he gets a chance like this again.

Although I thought that the fight was stopped a little too early, I have no problems with what the referee did. There is such a pressure as a ref to make sure that both fighters leave the ring able to fight another day. Many of the fans would have loved to have seen AJ knock Takam out unconscious but I don't think that this would happen. Takam was riding the shots well and I believe would have made it to the end of the 12th round.

Katie Taylor did just about enough to win her first world title. Katie hit Anahi Sanchez with a great body shot which put her down but after that the fight was relatively scrappy. I was very pleased that the fans in the crowd seemed to get behind Katie Taylor and support her all the way through. This shows how women's boxing is growing and more female fighters will be coming through.

Dillian Whyte beat Robert Helenius by unanimous points decision to win the WBC silver heavyweight belt. This should line up a big fight with Deontay Wilder with the winner of that fight then going on to have a mega unification fight with AJ.

It was a great event. I look forward to seeing Katie Taylor in more fights like the one she had last night. Against tough opposition. The heavyweight division is also spicing up. I can't wait.
